Convert FAT To NTFS Without Losing Data

When you want to formate your drive, a window comes up with option “file system” i.e is FAT, FAT32 or NTFS. This is because your operating system is installed on one of them. NTFS (New Technology File System) is mostly recommanded because its more secure and most of windows xp features work on it. NTFS allows you to access  File and folder permission, compression, encryption and privacy options.

If you are using FAT and want to convert it to NTFS than its very easy just follow the steps given below:

  • Click on “Start” and in “Run” type “command” or “Cmd” and press ok.
  • You will see a window of MSDOS prompt.
  • In cmd prompt type this “convert c: /fs:ntfs” and press Enter.
  • You can type any letter instead of “c”  because its drive name.
  • When you press enter you’ll see this message
“the conversion will take place instead the next time Windows starts up”
  • After restart pc, the Check Disk utility will run, the conversion will be performed automatically and you may find that your PC will reboot twice more.
You can check that the drive is converted to NTFS or not, by right click on drive and then properties.
